Mother Catherine Wells
February 8, 1933 – July 8, 2017
Catherine (Black) Wells was born to Robert Black Sr. and Mary (Daniels) Black in Gorton, Alabama on February 8, 1933. She was raised to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ, and was baptized at an early age. Catherine attended public school in Savannah, Georgia and she later relocated to Elmira, New York in 1957. She was employed by the Head Start Early Childhood Development Organization and retired after sixteen years of service. She was a member of the International, Free & Accepted Masons of the World, St Francis Chapter #7, in Elmira NY. She was one of the founding members of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, served as an active member as President of the Mary Price Club, President of the Usher Board and President of the Missionary Department, she was a choir member and later consecrated as the Mother of the Church. “Mother Wells” as she was affectionately known, was called from labor to reward on July 8, 2017. She is survived by her youngest sister Eula Mae (Black) Wilson of Jacksonville FL, and a Sister/Friend Katie Mae (Brown) Clayborn; daughters, Debra (Sullivan) Nelson of Rochester NY and Ruth (Jim) Arty of Baltimore MD; sons, Anthony (Tonya) Williams of North Adams MA and Edwin (Stephanie) Geter of Buffalo NY, and a spiritual son Eddie Charles Hayes. Grandchildren; Keisha Black, Lacresha (Anthony) Scott, Octavia and Rochelle Black, Catherine A. Nelson, Anthony (T.J.) Williams Jr., Zecary Banks and Ariel L. Geter. Great grandchildren; Mark Black, Josh Wallace and Savannah Scott, and two Great Great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Wells, Sisters; Edna Mae Fields, Lillie Rean (Black) Washington, Brothers; Willie B. Black, George Black Sr. and Robert Black Jr., her daughter, Mary Catherine Black and Donald Black. Service will be held at St Paul Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 am, located at 402 Sullivan St, Elmira NY 14901. Rev Johnny Vaughn, Senior Pastor .
