Maureen Mosch-Whitney

Obituary of Maureen E. Mosch-Whitney

MOSCH-WHITNEY, Maureen Elizabeth (George) Age 59, of Elmira NY, joined her two children Christine and Jamey in Heaven on June 20th, 2017, two weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. She was an incredible woman of great strength, Love and resilience. An automobile accident in 1975 took her daughter Christine and her left leg. Despite this devastation she continued to persevere; having three more children. A brain aneurysm at the age of 30 took her life briefly but her will to live for her children brought her back. After marrying her husband, Kevin Whitney in 1989 they created a wonderful life together. Maureen was the proud owner of Point Beverage and Deli and against all odds made it a successful and thriving business. Maureen, who has always looked out for others even when it meant putting herself last, has taken in more than 50 people over the years who did not otherwise have a place to go or needed guidance. She and Kevin were even foster parents for several years. After years of ownership, the business was sold to start a new slower paced life in Florida. In 2013 after finding her son, Jamey, deceased in her home, she and Kevin relocated back to Elmira, to have the needed support of family. In May, while on their way home from visiting their daughter, a minor car accident, resulting in a broken back, eventually lead to the discovery of the cancer. Despite the diagnosis Maureen was determined to fight this battle head on so she could have more time with her husband, children and grandchildren who she loved with all of her heart. Known as Aunt Meme to most of her nieces, nephews and relatives, Maureen leaves behind her devoted and loving husband Kevin Whitney; daughters, Tonia (Kenneth) Driscoll, Julie (Steve) Crawford and Debbie Harris; nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Makenna, Riley, Tegan, Noah, Mackenzie, Corrine, Courtney and Macy; sisters Anita (Donald) Brown and Rebecca (Phil) Spallone; brother Greg George; father Dick (Carol) George; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many loved ones. Family and friends who wish to celebrate Maureen's life are invited to visit Walter J Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St at Washington Ave, Elmira on Sunday, June 25th from 1-4 pm.
