Obituary of Thomas E. Sloniger

Thomas E. Sloniger, Esquire Age 99, of Elmira, NY passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 unexpectedly, but peacefully with family by his side. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen; son Thomas J Sloniger, daughter Janet M Scarnecchia, sister Helen Fletcher and brother John Sloniger. Survived by daughter and son in law Donna M. and Steven E. Isaacs along with grandchildren, Stephen Hourihan, Shawn Hourihan, Joshua Hourihan, Jeremy Hourihan, Tina Scarnecchia, Daniel Scarnecchia, Karen Summers and David Sloniger. Twelve great grandchildren: Michala, Christian, Maylynn, Alex, Bradyn, Natalie, Joseph, Lucas, Angela, Ryan, Kayla and Justin. Also survived by sister, Virginia Shrauger. Tom loved to say that he was born a roller skater, as his mom was skating down the driveway the night before he arrived. Tom always claimed his daughter Donna convinced him to purchase Joycrest Skating Rink, so when most folks their age were dreaming of retirement, Tom and Helen dove in and became rink operators. 38 years later their legacy lives on. Tom always felt that children needed a safe, fun place to go, and by the number of kids, now parents and grandparents themselves, who have stopped in over the years to let us know that if it weren't for Joycrest, and "Mr. S", they don't know what they would have done. Tom was an Attorney in private practice and Law Guardian for hundreds of children. He was a US Navy Veteran who proudly served our country during WWII. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St., at Washington Ave., Elmira on Tuesday, April 14th from 4 to 7 pm. His funeral and committal services will follow at 7 pm. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Tom through donations to the Arctic League or Holy Family Catholic School.
