Obituary of Charles R. Davis

DAVIS, Charles R. "Richie" Age 92 of Elmira, NY. He was born March 16, 1922 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Davis and passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015. He was predeceased by his daughter; Brenda Davis, along with his brother and six sisters. Richie is survived by his daughter; Patricia (Bobby) Jones, son; Charles "Ricky" Davis Jr., sisters; Nathalia (James) Snowden and Elsie (Howard) Ransey, his grandchildren; Carla Barclay, Tracie (Jon) Rouse, Abdul Muhammad, Akil Muhammad, Kalimah Muhammad, and Ali Muhammad, along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charles retired from the Elmira Housing Authority. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was also the first African American inducted into the Elmira Softball Hall of Fame. An avid baseball player and a golfer until the day he died, he was a lifetime member at Tomasso's and is remembered as one of the best baseball players Elmira ever had. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, February 9th at Ss. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church. A repass will be held at the Queen City Lodge, Benjamin Street, Elmira, following the service. Interment to be held at a later time at the convenience of Charles' family.
