Obituary of Christine J. Rosner

Christine Rosner, age 95, was born April 1, 1929, in Nuremburg. Germany, the daughter of George and Barbara Rosner. Christine grew up during the Nazi era and was greatly affected by it. After WW II she went to Munich where she graduated from translator school and worked various positions for the Allies, including the Displaced Person Emigration Program at the American Consulate where she became painfully aware of Nazi atrocities during the war. From 1951 to 1957 she was a secretary at the Neubiberg Airbase before being transferred to Paris to work for NATO. Christine left Paris around 1959 and emigrated to the United States. She lived in New York City while attending Columbia University part-time. She worked as a Medical Secretary at the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research where her passion for protection and humane care for animals was born. She graduated with a BA degree in 1967 from Columbia and transferred to the University of Connecticut receiving a MA in 1970 and a PhD in 1974. Christine moved to Elmira in 1970 where she became an Instructor of German at Elmira College before being promoted to Assistant Professor of German language and Literature in 1974. She retired in 1994. Christine was a passionate animal welfare advocate. She studied and admired the works of Albert Schweitzer and Mahatma Gandhi and his teaching of the reverence of all life. Her love of cats led her to Trap/Neuter/Return bringing many cats to local Vets to be spayed/neutered and then released them to various sites around Elmira where she fed and protected them. Christine had an amazing network of friends, including former students, all over the world. She corresponded with several people whom she had never met but shared her love of animals. Christine passed away peacefully at home. She was predeceased by her thirteen plus cats who were her beloved family. Memorials should be sent to TLC TNR, c/o Community Foundation, 301 South Main St. Horseheads, NY 14845, or Paradise Garden Animal Haven, 598 Kent Hill Rd, Woodhull, NY 14898.
