Obituary of Lynn L. Brewer
Ms Lynn L Brewer, aged 83, of 100 Curren Drive, Elmira, NY sadly passed away peacefully in her home after an arduous battle with cancer on Sunday 21st of July, 2024.
Lynn was born in Mount Vernon, NY to parents, Monroe S Terwilliger and Helen Hall (Laubach) on the 6th of May, 1941.
Lynn moved to Easton, PA with her mother and step-father, Elwood Bixler Laubach around 1944. It was here that she developed her avid love of reading at the young age of 6 after developing a rare skin condition which left her confined to her home for several months. As a teenager, she attended the Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, PA where she was actively involved in Drama Club, Women's Choir, field hockey, and wrote for school literary publications. Her love of reading and writing developed further during this time.
After graduation in 1959, she was accepted into a Liberal Arts Program at Elmira College. Due to her fondness of the community, she remained in Elmira for the duration of her lifetime. She also received her BS in General Business in 1999 from SUNY Regents College (Excelsior College) in Albany, NY. She worked in Elmira Savings Bank for over 10 years, and then dedicated her life's work to Non-profit Charitable Community Organizations.
Lynn had extremely strong ties to the community and was actively involved in several community organizations including, The League of Women Voters of Chemung County, Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Chemung County, Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition, Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coalition (STTAC), Board Member of the National Park Service, Friends of the Underground Railroad, The National Democratic Committee, Steele Memorial Library, Dept of Commerce Bureau of the Census, American Heart Association and the Chemung County Historical Society. She received several awards and certifications over the years and was actively involved setting up funding and writing grants for local events including the Golden Shoe.
Lynn passed down her love of literature to her children and grandchildren. She could always be found with a book at hand and enjoyed a compelling mystery or historical non-fiction. She had a fondness for the arts and a love of music, jazz in particular. The NY Times Crossword Puzzle challenged her every week! She loved to cook and share recipes with her friends, especially during the monthly "Nosh and Natter" events in her home.
She is predeceased by her father, Monroe S Terwilliger, mother, Helen (Hall) Laubach and step-father Elwood B Laubach, Brothers, Gibb and Steve Terwilliger, David Laubach and stepson Calvin Brewer II (survived by his wife, Jaime Brewer).
She is survived by her two children, her eldest son, Kurt Hagar, daughter Kirsten Dempsey (son-in-law Richard) as well as her partner Calvin Brewer, stepson Robert Brewer (daughter in-law Karen), stepdaughters Joy Lynn Brewer-Clemons, Dianna Brewer (Abdul Rasheed) and Vickie Brewer as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren living both in the US and Ireland. Lynn is also survived by her sister Anne Terwilliger (Nelson), her brother Peter Terwilliger (Libby) as well as sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Donations in Lynn L. Brewer's name can be made to your local library, American Cancer Society, SPCA or charity of your choice to carry on her commitment to community service.
