Obituary of Mark Eldon Brannon

It is with deep sorrow that the Mortis and Brannon families announce the death of Mark Brannon. He passed away very unexpectedly on Sunday, October 22, 2023. He was born on August 12, 1963 in Belize City, Belize to Gilroy Brannon (deceased) and Joan L. Mortis (Frazier) (deceased). Mark was Joan's only child. Mark emigrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1971, where he attended PS 20, Rothschild JHS and Sarah J. Hail HS. He grew up in the Fort Green and Clinton Hills community where he met and befriended several life long friends. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball with them. He felt the call to serve his country in the Army National Guard along with several of his friends from the neighborhood, where he served eight years in the 205th Support Group as a mechanic. He later relocated to Elmira, NY where he met and married Crystal Hurlburt. He later held various jobs as a security guard and a painter. His family was his legacy. He leaves behind his wife of many years, Crystal Hurlburt; children: Juanita Miller, Marc James, Kareem and Kaheem Mack, Sabrianna Burchard, Brooklin Osterhout, Angel (Brannon) Garrett, Dominique, Elijah and Aleeah Brannon. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and siblings: Gilroy, Hope, Melissa, Kimberly and Tyrone Brannon. His beloved cousins, aunts and uncles were more like brothers and sisters. Grace Crawford, Henry Mortis, Herbert Mortis, Vernadine Nuwere and Horace Mortis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Gilroy and Joan Frazier; aunts, Marion Rushford, Lionel Pascascio, Ruthiel Baptist, Harold Mortis Jr. and Leonilla Faber. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Monday, October 30, 2023 from 1:00 pm 2:00 pm. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery where the Chemung County Honor Guard will accord Mr. Brannon Military Honors.
