Obituary of Ruth A. Nee Rathbun Shumaker

went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at her home with family by her side at the age of 86. Ruth was born October 13, 1937 in East Troy, PA to the late George and Ruth (McIlwain) Rathbun. Her loving husband of 60 years, Gayle Duane Shumaker preceded her in death in 2021. She was also predeceased by her sons, Scott Shumaker and Todd Shumaker; sisters, Josephine Wright and Doris Wooster; brother, Harold Rathbun; brother-in-law, Philip Wright; brother-in-law, Fred Shumaker; sister-in law, Louise Goings; dear friend, Kathleen Siglin. She is survived by her beloved children: son, Mark (Debbie) Shumaker; daughter Susan (Fran Connor) Wenzel; daughter-in-law Kim Shumaker; Todd’s fiancee, Maressa Savino; brother, Robert (Kay) Rathbun; sister-in-law, Gypsie (Richard) Calvi; brother-in-law Carroll Wooster; grandchildren: Elisha aka Eli Shumaker, Matthew Shumaker, Adam (Kayla) Shumaker, Mallory Shumaker; Shelly Bieber, John (Lindsay) Bieber; Emily Wenzel, Logan Wenzel; Sage Pesesky; 10 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; special niece: Bonnie (Don) Dalia; along with several nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends and neighbors. Ruth graduated from Troy High School in 1955. She then attended the Abington School of Nursing where she received her nursing degree becoming a Registered Nurse. Ruth also went on to receive her B. S. Degree from Elmira College. Ruth was a dedicated RN for the Arnot Ogden Medical Center and retired after many faithful years of service at the Arnot Ogden Memorial Center, serving as both a nurse and in the infection control department as well. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Her memorial service will follow at 12 pm. Pastor Mark Hickey will officiate. Ruth will be laid to rest with Gayle and her son in the Glenwood Cemetery, Troy, PA at the convenience of the family.
