Obituary of Joseph Hughes

Joseph Hughes, Jr. was born on April 1, 1950 to Verdell Ancrum and Joseph Hughes Sr. of Summerville, SC, both of whom preceded him in death. He was reared by his grandmother Maybelle Whetsell who has also preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brother Clayton Hughes and sister Beatrice Linder. Joseph received his education at Austin High School in Summerville, SC. He worked for Westvaco Lumber Company for many years and was a carpenter by trade. Joe was a fun loving person, always the life of the party and he loved all of his family dearly. Joseph met the love of his life, Bessie Scharborough in Summerville, SC, relocated to Elmira, NY and was married July 17, 2004 where he remained. Those in whose memory he will always remain: his loving wife Bessie Hughes; children, Joseph Hughes, III, Stacey Hughes, Stephanie Hughes, Joey Williams, Konya Goodwin, Delon Halloway, Antonio White (Queita), Kevin Baylock (Mona), Melissa Glouck (Keith); siblings Thomas Frierson, Mary Moree, Tyrone Frierson (Lois), Verdie Jenkins, Charles Frierson (Stacy); sisters-in-law Louise Robinson, Annette Wickes, Kathy Scharborough, Vera Wood (John); aunts Amanda Lewis, Leila Barner, Bessie Mae Simmons and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Family and friends are invited to visit Shabach Tabernacle, 1133 Lake St., Elmira on Friday, June 18th from 10 to 11 am. His funeral service will begin at 11 am. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.THE FAMILY REQUESTS (and will enforce) THAT EVERYONE WEAR MASKS AND SANITIZE UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH.
