Obituary of George W. Keith
KEITH, George W., Sr.
Age 83 of Horseheads, NY, passed away Friday, November 10, 2017, surrounded by family, including his son, daughter-in-law, and step-children. He was born February 25, 1934 in McRoberts, KY, son of the late George and Sarah (Helm) Keith. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 31 years, Janet L. Keith, (Mitzie); and his siblings Janetta Jackson, Willie Keith, and Fred Keith. He is survived by his children George (Lucy) Keith, Cindy (Sherman) Head, Tina (Dan) McCullough, Rena (Russ) Sinclair, Tammy (Lonnie) Drake, Mike (Margie Edgerly) VanHouten, Todd (Laura) VanHouten, Janet (Ian) Mills Kelly (Andy) DeGuire, Karla (Jay Benjamin) Johnson, and special daughter-in-law Mary Ann VanHouten; siblings Margaret Woods, Louise Bennett, Arthur Keith, Charles Keith, Hattie Stroman, Ellerine Brooks, Delphine Keith; his 29 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins extending through the very large "Keith" family. He worked for GE for 32 years. After retiring, he worked for the Star Gazette, then went on to driving bus for the Horseheads School District where the children remember him as "Papa George", fulfilling many of his personal joys, including mentoring and establishing special bonds with countless children, parents, and others. People in our community are constantly approaching members of the family to share their personal stories and connections about their blessed moments with George. Please, keep them coming and we will always hold him dear in our hearts and celebrate the many blessings of this life! George was passionate about reading and preaching the bible, and spending time with family and friends. He loved fishing, playing cards, riding his bike, and especially sharing wisdom with his many grandkids. He enjoyed gardening, watching sports, grilling, singing, driving, and laughing. He was a great listener – a spiritual leader to all in the family, a bright light in every room, and a calming, joyful presence. He loved everyone "a big ole bunch!" Family and friends are invited to visit Faith Temple Community Church, Harper St., Elmira on Wednesday, November 15th from 10 am to 12 noon. His funeral will follow at 12 noon.
